The icefields are about a five hour drive from Calgary and if you get an opportunity to drive the icefeilds parkway to get to the fields then take it! It is a truly beautiful drive through the mountains. The actual Brewster tour takes you out on the glacier itself, giving you a chance to walk on the ice. 
We camped overnight so as to avoid spending the entire day in the car, as it was our campsite was closer to Jasper so we still spent most of the day in the car. But on the whole everyone enjoyed the trip.

It's a little creepy just how fast the glacier is receding, eh?
During the winter it advances but I think they said the glacier is receding between 10 and 15 meters each year overall. And yes, in terms of glaciers that's really fast!
