some thoughts on performance....

Well, I did it. After attending weekly dance classes for over a year and a half I finally worked up the courage to attend a dance workshop. It would seem that November is a great time of year for both workshops and shows because I had to sort through a a slew of options and narrow it down to one critical choice. The wallet can truly be cruel some days and we just have to carry on regardless. So I picked the Mira Betz workshop (which also had a show the night before), hosted by the Beduoin Dance Company here in town.

Wow!

Not only did we watch some amazing dance Friday night, but the workshop the following day was fantastic! I was not sure what to expect. Instead of teaching a dance routine to follow, Mira Betz focused on method. She focused on methods for becoming a better performer as well as technical methods for developing muscle memory and strength. This was a workshop that would be valuable to dancers no matter what style they prefer. Her instruction was clear and approachable. If something was not working for us, she quickly found another way to get her point across. I found the classes to be challenging on many levels and that was the entire point. Mira wanted us going outside of our comfort zone and I think for most of us that goal was achieved.

I have received some insight on the difference between a performer and an entertainer. I also have some ideas on how to improve my own dance. I think I am still digesting some of what Mira explained, and that is fine with me. I hope to be able to make the time to put some of these points into practice!
